Top Ten 80s Comedy Movies

As a huge fan of comedy movies, one can simply not deny that the 80s produced some of the best comedies of all time. With hilarious actors like Bill Murray and Chevy Chase starring in one hit after another, their is quite a lengthy list of candidates to choose from. After much thought, we have come up with our list of the top 10 best eighties comedy movies.
10. Revenge of the Nerds

Year Released: 1984
Starring: Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards, Timothy Busfield, Curtis Armstrong, Ted McGinley, Bernie Casey, John Goodman
Best Quote: “Remember, there’s 6,127 students at Adams, 58% of which are girls… So, that’s 7,107.32 boobs.” (Louis and Gilbert)
With frat guys constantly battling nerds and the occasional panty raid taking place on campus, how couldn’t I include Revenge of the Nerds on my list. Weather you were a nerd, a jock, or somewhere in-between, this movie is sure to have you laughing your ass off.
9. Porkys

Year Released: 1982
Starring: Dan Monahan, Mark Herrier, Wyatt Knight, Roger Wilson
Best Quote: “All I need is a watermelon and two jelly donuts!” (Pee Wee Morris)
For those who have not seen Porky’s, what we have here is a movie based entirely on a group of Florida high school students hell bent on loosing their virginity. With some of the funniest scenes from the decade and quite possibly the best revenge plot ever, Porky’s is no doubt an absolute classic 80s movie.
8. Spaceballs

Year Released: 1987
Starring: Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga
Best Quote: “Helmet. So, at last we meet for the first time for the last time.” (Lone Starr)
I’m usually not a big fan of “spoof” movies at all, but Spaceballs is one that I just can’t help but love. With John Candy playing the classic role of Barf and Mel Brooks writing, directing, and starring in the movie, there is no way Spaceballs wasn’t going to make my list.
7. Stripes

Year Released: 1981
Starring: Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Warren Oates, P. J. Soles, John Candy
Best Quote: “Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it’s usually something unusual.” (Winger)
With Bill Murray playing a lazy American Army recruit, Stripes definitely has its place as a top comedy movie from the 1980s. This is quite possibly Bill Murray’s best role in a comedy as he reaks havoc in the U.S. Army.
6. National Lampoon’s Vacation

Year Released: 1983
Starring: Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, Dana Barron, Randy Quaid
Best Quote: “I got laid off when they closed that asbestos factory, and wouldn’t you know it, the army cuts my disability pension because they said that the plate in my head wasn’t big enough.” (Cousin Eddie)
As the very first film in National Lampoon’s Vacation series of comedy movies, it was hands down the best in my opinion. As Clark Griswold tries to get his family across the county to visit an amusement park, there are quite a few comedic situations that arise along the way. If that isn’t enough, Cousin Eddie is sure to keep you laughing.
5. Airplane!

Year Released: 1980
Starring: Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves
Best Quote: “Flying a plane is no different from riding a bicycle; it’s just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.” (Kramer)
Even know slap stick comedies aren’t really my cup of tea, I definitely had to put Airplane on the list. As one of the most popular movies from the 80s, Airplane is a solid eighties movie that is consistently funny from beginning to end.
4. The Breakfast Club

Year Released: 1985
Starring: Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy
Best Quote: “PB & J with the crusts cut off… Well, Brian, this is a very nutritious lunch; all the food groups are represented. Did your mom marry Mr. Rogers?” (Bender)
The Breakfast Club is absolutely one my all time favorite quintessential eighties movies. In a story about five completely different individuals (the brain, the athlete, the basket case, the princess. and the criminal) spending their entire Saturday in detention, there seems to be someone in this movie that everyone can relate to.
3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Year Released: 1986
Starring: Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jeffrey Jones, Jennifer Grey
Best Quote: “The key to faking out the parents is the clammy hands. It’s a good non-specific symptom; I’m a big believer in it.” (Ferris Bueller)
I’m not sure this movie needs much explanation as it is unarguably one of the best movies of the decade. In a constant cat and mouse game between Ferris’ and the principle at his school, Ed Rooney, you quickly find out how to skip school in style.
2. Caddyshack

Year Released: 1980
Starring: Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Michael O’Keefe, Bill Murray
Best Quote: “Oh, this your wife, huh? A lovely lady. Hey baby, you must’ve been something before electricity.” (Al Czervik)
While Caddyshack did not receive great reviews upon its initial release, this movie has since become an absolute cult classic. With Bill Murray battling gophers and Rodney Dangerfield completely pissing off the conservative Judge Smails, it is no doubt this movie is high up on our list.
1. Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Year Released: 1982
Starring: Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, Brian Backer
Best Quote: “Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he’s got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.” (Jeff Spicoli)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High is, by far, my favorite comedy movie from the 80s. What can’t you like about this coming-of-age teen comedy written by Cameron Crowe? The verbal disputes between Spicoli and Mr. Hand have me laughing out of control every time I see this movie. In addition to the comedy, we also get to see Phoebe Cates topless at the pool. Quite possibly the most epic topless scene of the entire eighties.
