In no particular order, we take a look at the 5 most significant injuries NFL teams will face as they embark into the 2010 season. The past few weeks of pre-season football have definitely brought light to a few players who injuries leave their teams wondering how big of an impact they will have on the fast approaching season. Check out our picks for the top 5 most significant injuries of the 2010 NFL season:

Byron Leftwich, Pittsburgh Steelers

With Ben Roethlisberger guaranteed to miss the first 4 games of the season, the quarterback battle in Pittsburgh has been between veteran Byron Leftwich and Steelers fifth round pick in 2008, Dennis Dixon. Leftwich, now sidelined with a potentially serious knee injury after Thursday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, has give way Dennis Dixon starting off the season. Although Dixon has quite a pair of legs on him, his poor performance last week could spell trouble for Pittsburgh as they look to keep their heads above water until Big Ben returns in week 5.

Elvis Dumervil, Denver Broncos

With the Bronco’s top defensive player and sack leader of 2009 sidelined with a chest injury, Elvis Dumervil’s absence could spell disaster for the mile high city. Dumervil has been announced out for the entire season, and Denver’s already shaky defense is bound to keep the Broncos away from any sort of playoff run.

Ed Reed, Baltimore Ravens

With Ed Reed still battling a number of injuries and recently placed on the PUP list, it looks like the Raven’s will be missing him in the backfield for at least 6 weeks. There is no doubt that Reed has a massive impact in the performance of Baltimore’s defense and we are likely to see some noticeable defensive struggles until his return.

Malcolm Kelly, Washington Redskins

With Donovan McNabb expected to do big things in Washington, there is no doubt he will be missing Malcolm Kelly in the early weeks of the season. Kelly, who re-aggravated a hamstring injury last week, is a force to be reckoned with as a 6′4″ third year receiver. With Kelly out, McNabb will have to turn towards the unproven Devin Thomas for offensive productivity.

Sidney Rice, Minnesota Vikings

As Bret Farve’s favorite target in 2009, Sidney Rice’s absence in the early part of the season is expected to have a big impact on the Vikings offense. Rice, who just underwent hip surgery, is expected to be out a minimum of 6 games with the possibility of the entire season. We will just have to wait in see who will be able to step and fill his shoes during those first 6 games (maybe longer).

Worst All Star Game: NFL Pro Bowl or NBA All Star Game?

All Star contests usually are a weekend spectacle that showcases the top talents of the league. They allow fans to see some of their favorite players from all teams play together for just one day. The games are not highly competitive, but still display a high level of skill and athleticism. However, this year some could be one of the years that both NBA All Star game and NFL Pro Bowl are lacking some of the best players in both sports as many key players simply are not participating. Muff Slap decided to take a look at each game to decide which game is the worse viewing spectacle this year.

NFL Pro Bowl

The NFL is the most popular sport and the most popular league in the country. The Super Bowl is usually the highest rating viewing audience every year. The one unique thing about the Pro Bowl is that it usually takes place in Hawaii after the season is over, but in attempt to make the Pro Bowl a more popular game for the fans, commissioner Roger Goodell moved the Pro Bowl to the weekend before the Super Bowl and in the same city that is hosting the Super Bowl. Although it is great that the commissioner has attempted to keep a football game every weekend for the fans, this move simply failed. By having the Pro Bowl the weekend before the Super Bowl. we did not see all the selections from the two top teams that are particpating in the Super Bowl. In addition, a handful of the players that lost in the NFC and AFC championship games have removed themselves from participating as well. Every year, players back out of the Pro Bowl due to injury or various excuses as to why they cannot make the trip. It seems that this year especially, the Pro bowl squads consist of mainly second and third string alternates. With all the buzz about the Super Bowl hitting full stride and the talent spread thin, this game seemed to get even less attention than normal. Commissioner Roger Goodell took a chance and threw a hail mary with his attempt to make the Pro Bowl relevant, but unfortantely this attempt was intercepted.

NBA All Star Game

The NBA All Star Game is nothing more than a popularity contest with fans worldwide being able to cast their votes for who they want to participate. Sure the NBA helps their own cause by adding the reserves that deserve to be in the All Star Game, but that does not negate the fact that the All Star Game is nothing more than a popularity contest. For example, Allen Iverson is named an All Star and if you look at his stats, he does not deserve to participate. In addition, fans can vote online so people from all around the world are voting for their native hero even know he might not be deserving of it. Up until a few weeks ago, Tracy McGrady was going to be an All Star even though he has been active for only a handful of games.

In my opinion, the NBA does have a slight edge in the overall All Star weekend because of the slam dunk contest and the three point contest. The rookie versus sophomore contest is also a great way to showcase the young talent in the league. So overall, I would have to say that the worse event to watch is the NFL Pro Bowl because of the number of star players that are not participating and the fact the their is only so much entertainment and creativity incorporated into a football game. You might see a great run, catch or football move in the Pro Bowl, but you are not going to see the dunks and creativity that is incorporated to the NBA All Star game.

5 Worst Super Bowl Match Ups of All Time

There’s nothing worse than having the most anticipated sporting event of the year be a blow out by half time. The Super Bowl is the most hyped sporting event of the year with millions or people watching worldwide. Whether you’re watching the game, or the commercials, it’s a great event. Traditionally, the Super Bowl has the two best teams of the year, but occasionally a team will get hot right in time for the playoffs and make it to the big game. They’ll make it to the Super Bowl, only to be humiliated in a complete blowout. Muff Slap decided to take a look at the 5 worst Super Bowl match ups of all time.

5. Super Bowl XLI – 2007

Chicago Bears vs. Indianapolis Colts

This was truly a Super Bowl that encompassed a high powered offense against a dominate defense. Although the old say goes “offense wins games, but defense wins championships,” this was certainly not the case here. The high powered Colt’s offense wore down Chicago’s defense immediately. Chicago’s only offensive threat was the kick return skills of Devin Hester. This game was a mismatch after the opening kick, and an easy game for Peyton Manning to capture his first Super Bowl title.

4. Super Bowl XIV – 1980

The 1979 Rams team were one of the luckiest teams to make it to the Super Bowl. Despite having a 9-7 regular season record, and playing the second half of their season with their back up quarterback Vince Ferragamo, the Rams some how snuck into the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, they were playing the team of the decade, the Pittsburgh Steelers, lead by quarterback Terry Bradshaw. The Pittsburgh Steelers were playing for their fourth Super Bowl title of the decade and despite Terry Bradshaw’s 3 interceptions, they were able to beat one of the least deserving teams ever to make it to the Super Bowl.

3. Super Bowl XXIX – 1995

This Super Bowl had a lot of buildup, but never really lived up to the hype. This game was over by half time, with Steve Young emerging from Joe Montana’s shadow by passing for a record 6 touchdowns, 4 of those occurring by half time. Jerry Rice caught 3 touchdown passes from his 10 receptions in route to achieve the game’s MVP. The San Diego offense spent much of the game playing catch up, but never really had a chance.

2. Super Bowl XXII – 1988

John Elway is one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, but his Bronco’s had no chance against the Washington Redskins. The Denver Broncos made it to the Super Bowl solely on John Elway’s arm; not only did the team lack a running game, but their defense couldn’t stop the run. This game looked like the Bronco’s had a chance to win a Super Bowl ring, but after jumping ahead 10-0, they never scored again. The Redskins took over after trailing 10-0, in one of the most dominating performances in Super Bowl history. The Redskins compiled 35 points in the second quarter, with 280 yards from rushing and 602 total yards.

1. Super Bowl XX – 1986

This Super Bowl was over before it even started, at least in the eyes of the Chicago Bears. The Bears already created the “Super Bowl Shuffle” song as a precursor to the Super Bowl; this team was so confident that they created a song and dance before the Super Bowl was even played. The Chicago Bears let their play back up their video. In New England’s first 21 offensive plays, only 4 went for positive yards and their net total yardage was 19 yards. To insult the Patriots even further, the Chicago Bears scored a touchdown by defensive end William “The Refrigerator” Perry in a one yard rush. This was by far the biggest mismatch in Super Bowl history.

The Outcome of the Charger’s Game

The highly optimistic San Diego Charger’s fans started the day off partying hard with the expectations of a big win against the New York Jets. Well, that didn’t go quite as planned for the Chargers and here is a great picture a friend of ours took when leaving the Charger’s game yesterday. I would say this sums up the Charger’s single playoff game loss pretty well. Let’s just hope nobody decided to take a piss next to this guy’s car.

NFL: A League of Parity?

The NFL season is just about a quarter of the way through and the identity of most NFL teams has taken shape. Sure, just like every season there are the early season surprises and disappointments, but lets examine a topic that commissioner Goodell and the rest of the league emphasize; parity.

There are currently five undefeated teams in the NFL after week 5. Every one of these teams, besides the Denver Broncos, were thought to have a solid chance of doing well this season by many NFL analysts and experts. The Denver Broncos are undoubtedly the biggest surprise of the season so far. No one predicted a team that has a rookie head coach, traded their star quarterback, and had their best wide receiver sit out most of training camp would be undefeated. If you had asked the majority of the experts which is more realistic, the Broncos being 5-0 or 0-5, I can assure the majority of them would have chose the ladder of the two options. The remaining four teams all looked like potential Super Bowl contenders since the beginning of training camp and have performed to their expectations at this point in the season. There are still a handful of one and two loss teams that are still near the cream of the crop and have an excellent chance of making the Super Bowl.

Now let’s take a look at the bottom of the barrel. There are currently four teams that have not broken into the win column yet. The only team of these four that is a huge surprise is the Tennessee Titans, who were able to keep the majority of their team that reached the playoffs last year. The other three teams are just plain terrible and all three have a realistic chance of not breaking into the win column all season. In addition, there are the Raiders, Lions, and Bills who all have one loss and look pretty much hopeless for this season. You would have to sit back and think long and hard about when the last time there were this many awful teams in the league.

In a league that promotes parity, about twenty five percent of the teams in the league stand little to no chance of winning on any given Sunday. While the salary cap is in place to help stabilize the parity and quality of the league, it appears as if the league is actually drifting in the opposite direction. Whether it is the management, coaching, or talent it appears the good teams are getting better and the bad teams are getting worse. The teams that are managed best, from top to bottom, are constantly sitting in front of their divisions with the threat of making a deep playoff run in January. Conversely, teams on the bottom of the barrel are just hoping to implement a rebuilding process, get the next savior draft pick, or wait for management to make another coaching change. Their seem to be quite a few awful teams this year that don’t appear to have their presence felt in the National Football league.

So as the 2010 season approaches with the threat of no salary cap, this might actually turn out to be a good thing for the league as the gap can’t get any wider in terms of parity. And with much still up in the air for the 2010 season, the only thing we know for sure is that the Raiders will still find a way to get even worse next year.
