Top 10 College Football Stadium Nicknames
With the end of the college football regular season just a few weeks away we decided to take a look at the college football stadiums with the best nicknames. This list is based solely on the nickname of the stadium and not on the team’s tradition, home field advantage, alumni support, stadium size or recent teams’ performance.
Death Valley
School: LSU Tigers
Death Valley has the ninth largest stadium capacity holding just over 90,000 fans and has been know to have some of the most vocal fans in the country. In fact, this crowd was so noisy during a game between Auburn and LSU in 1988 that after LSU scored a late touchdown the crowd eruption registered an earthquake on the campus seismograph.
The Big House
School: Michigan Wolverines
The Big House has the second largest stadium capacity holding over 105,000 maize and blue fans. This stadium is known for the famous Michigan wave that is mandated in your orientation as a freshman on campus. The Big House has one of the largest and most notorious fan bases in the Big Ten.
The 12th Man
School: Texas A&M
The 12th Man has the fourteenth largest stadium capacity exceeding 80,000 fans. This nickname embodies what a strong student following represents. This school is most known for the 1999 collapse of their “Aggie Bonfire” that was a tragic campus event that was followed up by the upset of their instate rivals the then fifth ranked Texas Longhorns.
The Swamp
School: Florida Gators
The Swamp has the eleventh largest stadium capacity holding over 88,000 strong and is home to the current National Champions. This stadium’s fan base is right on its opponents due to the stadiums structure. With the playing field below ground level, this is one of the best home field advantages. One of the candidates for team of the decades has given this loyal fan base even more reason to celebrate.
The Shoe or The Horseshoe
School: Ohio State Buckeyes
The Shoe or The Horseshoe has the fourth largest stadium capacity holding over 100,000 screaming Buckeye faithfuls. The stadium is named after the distinct look of a horse shoe. This stadium doesn’t even have lighting, so anytime there’s a night game the grounds crew must roll the lights up to the stadium. The stadium is always sold out with the fans decked out in their scarlet and grey.
Between the Hedges
School: Georgia Bulldogs
Between the Hedges has the seventh largest stadium capacity of over 92,000 for the Bull Dog alumni and students. The stadium gets the nickname not from what goes on between the trenches or “hedges” on the field but rather the hedges that surround the field. This team battles Florida every year for what is known as the “The World’s Largest Cocktail Party.”
The House Rockne Built
School: Notre Dame
The House Rockne Built is the seventeenth largest stadium holding over 80,000 fans for one the most recognizable teams in college football history. This stadium was named after one of most well known coaches in college football history. The stadium which is overseen by “Touchdown Jesus” was developed with the insight from their coach to make sure their fan base was involved in every home game.
The Sea of Red
School: Nebraska Cornhuskers
The Sea of Red Stadium is the thirteenth largest stadium capacity holding over 85,000 Cornhuskers. With no professional sports teams in the entire state, this University’s football team draws the biggest crowd in the state. The Sea of Red comes from every corner of the state often sporting Styrofoam Cornhusks to cheer their team to victory.
Happy Valley
School: Penn State University
Happy Valley is the largest football stadium in college football today seating over 107,000 fans. Head coach, Joe Paterno, has been roaming the sidelines since 1966, and has become an iconic figure for the Penn State faithful. Happy Valley is well known for their White Out games where everyone is suppose to wear white. This tradition has quickly gained popularity across major college campuses across the nation.
The Rose Bowl
School: UCLA Bruins
The Rose Bowl has the eighth largest stadium capacity holding over 92,000 fans. Although, the UCLA Bruins play their home games here, the stadium has the recognition to stand on its own. This is not a nickname for the stadium, but the actually stadium name. However, no stadium is more synonymous with college football than that of the Rose Bowl and all the celebrations that surround their famous bowl game.
